Gender-Affirming Care
Gender-Affirming Surgery Assessments & Psychotherapy | Ontario Psychologists
Assessments
To be eligible for OHIP-covered gender-affirming genital surgery (or bottom surgery) in Ontario, two assessments recommending the surgery are required. One of the assessments must be conducted by a physician or nurse practitioner. The second assessment can be conducted by a qualified psychologist, as well as by a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, or registered social worker. Dr. Keating is a qualified “second assessor” for gender-affirming orchiectomies, hysterectomies, vaginoplasties, metoidioplasties, and phalloplasties. She previously worked at an adult gender identity clinic, and she completed training through Rainbow Health Ontario on coordinating and completing referrals for gender-affirming surgeries.

The process for assessing eligibility for gender-affirming surgery typically involves:
-
A clinical interview focused on your gender identity and history, transition goals, mental health needs, supports, and surgical eligibility according to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care.
-
Completion of psychological questionnaires.
-
If applicable, consultation with other providers familiar with your circumstances and health.
-
Completion of a psychological report. This report may include a recommendation for gender-affirming surgery, if WPATH criteria are met. It may also include other recommendations to support your mental health and well-being.
-
If WPATH criteria are met, completion of the second assessment section of Ministry of Health prior approval forms.
